Capetonians from all walks of life joined the rest of the country in celebrating this year's Mandela Day. Central to the day's celebrations —marked on July 18, the birthdate of the former president and global human rights icon — is the call for South Africans to set aside 67 minutes of their day in the service of others.

On Thursday July 14, an artwork created for Mandela Day, as part of the #My67Beads initiative, which is spearheaded by the NPO Relate Bracelets, was unveiled at the V&A Waterfront.

The artwork was created by young artists who participate in programmes provided by the organisation, Lalela. The organisation works with at-risk youth by providing them with educational arts skills, aimed at sparking their creative thinking and awakening their entrepreneurial spirit.

For the artwork, the artists pulled together sets of beads strung by the public, celebrities, and corporates in the run-up to Mandela Day.
