As Valentine’s Day approaches, there’s no better time to state our commitment to encourage people to love regardless of colour, creed or gender. Equality is a cornerstone of South African society and the United Nations (UN) Free & Equal initiative.

We share our values of responsibility and respect with the rest of the world. Many of our bracelet-makers suffered absolute discrimination based on the colour of their skin during apartheid and, through Relate Bracelets, are now given the opportunity to overcome the socio-economic situation they were placed in and able to restore their dignity through earnings and education.

Relate Bracelets has recently partnered with Free & Equal, an unprecedented UN global public education campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality. Free & Equal has the objective to raise awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and promote a greater respect for the rights of LGBT people everywhere.

At its core, Relate Bracelets is about supporting people and just as we aid our bracelet-makers by helping them find bright new opportunities, this Valentine’s Day we encourage you to love people for who they are as individuals, irrespective of where they come from, the colour of their skin, or their sexual preferences.

If you want to support the LGBT community in shaking off the burden of prejudice and discrimination please do contribute to the global conversation on the importance of respecting people for who they are.

Free & Equal bracelets are currently only available from the UN.
